The Social Media Club of Kansas City has launched a drive for used Internet-connected devices, especially laptops, that we will distribute to lower income Kansas City residents.

Desktops, laptops and smart phones will be collected at their regular meeting on November 2nd from 7:30-10:00 am at the Kansas City Cafe, 1532 Grand Blvd Kansas City, MO.

During the recent drive to encourage residents to pre-register their neighborhoods for Google Fiber, one of the barriers most commonly mentioned was the inability to afford the computer equipment needed to connect. This was especially true in the under-resourced “fiberhoods” on Kansas City’s East Side.

The computers will be completely refurbished, with hard drives wiped clean of personal information.  For ironclad data safety, donors will have the option of having an industrial strength data wipe be done by Synetic Technologies.

The PCs will be then given to those who participate in the digital literacy sessions we will be conducting using our mobile computing lab.

Because we are nonprofit organization that is recognized by the IRS, the equipment is likely to be tax deductible for most donors.

We are actively seeking community partners to work with us to collect equipment and sponsor the digital literacy events at their locations.  If you are interested, let us know using our contact form.
